Start with electricity, ideally a week or two before move-in.
Most providers need advance notice to activate service at a new address, and it’s the one utility whose absence turns every other moving-day problem into a much worse version of itself once the sun goes down.
Gas, if applicable, is worth scheduling around the same time, since some providers require an in-person appointment to safely turn it on.
💧 Water: Sometimes Not Even Your Job
In a lot of rental situations, water is billed to the property itself and simply included in rent.
Or, it might be handled directly by the landlord rather than something a tenant sets up individually.
That’s worth confirming directly with your landlord or lease rather than assuming you need to call anyone about it at all.
🗑️ Trash and Recycling: Easy to Forget Entirely
Trash and recycling sometimes bundled with the property.
Sometimes it’s a separate city service.
And sometimes it’s something you’re expected to arrange privately.
A quick question to your landlord or a look at your lease usually clears this up fast.
It’s a subject that is genuinely not to be wondering about when trash day arrives and yours is still on the curb.
🌐 Internet: The One With the Longest Lead Time
Internet is where apartment living actually simplifies things a little — but only if you check one thing first. Before you get attached to a provider, ask your leasing office (or check the move-in paperwork) whether the building has an exclusive arrangement with one internet company, which a lot of apartment complexes do. Some buildings even bundle basic internet into the rent already, which means your “utility” might just be a login, not a bill.
If you are setting it up yourself, treat it the same way you’d treat any other lead-time surprise: internet providers frequently need more advance scheduling than anything else on this list, sometimes a week or more out, occasionally with a technician visit required. Call as soon as you know your move-in date — before you’ve packed a single box — since a delayed install is one of the most common “why don’t I have this yet” surprises for a first apartment.
One more apartment-specific move: if you’ve got roommates, decide up front whose name the account is actually under and how the bill gets split, before the first invoice shows up and everyone stares at each other.
📋 The One Piece of Paper That Makes All of This Easier
Keep a simple running list — provider name, account number, confirmation number, phone number, website, and the date service is scheduled to start — for each utility as you set it up.
Moving day already has enough moving pieces without also trying to remember which company you called on which day for which service.
